A Delicious Twist on Sushi “Teriyaki Salmon Sushi”

Teriyaki Salmon Sushi

For sushi sandwiches, we used rice as one of four components because nori is folded into four quadrants and then filled with teriyaki cubes skewered onto a bed of steamed white rice with cucumbers and avocado on top!

Teriyaki sauce is an irresistibly tasty Japanese sweet-and-salty delight that pairs beautifully with beef, chicken, and seafood dishes as well as Asian noodles or poke bowls. Easy to buy or DIY it at home using mirin-sweetened rice wine as its key ingredient – meaning this sweet and tangy condiment burns easily when being heated quickly or used as an end glaze in fast cooking methods such as tempura shrimp frying.

Here is some helpful advice and strategies to simplify the Teriyaki Salmon Sushi-making experience.

A Perfect Sushi Rice

Sticky rice, also known as short grain with high starch content, tends to clump together when heated when cooking. Buy a Nishiki brand in the grocery store as it is delicious and reasonably priced, following its instructions to create delicious sushi rice meals every time – only needing 15 minutes soak time before using a wooden spatula to fluff up and fluff again after cooling; add vinegar seasoning for that final flourishing touch!

Seasoned Rice Wine Vinegar

To recreate authentic sushi rice flavor in cooked short grain sushi rice dishes, use sushi, which combines rice vinegar and salt, to recreate its slightly fermented flavor from when used as fermented feed for fish in ancient cultures. This gives short-grain sushi rice the true-tasting sushi experience!

Build your sushi-su by heating together 1 cup of rice vinegar with two tablespoons each of sea salt and agave until they dissolve, and allow it to cool before placing it into your pantry for future use. Or purchase pre-seasoned vinegar; either way, you should season hot rice according to personal taste before seasoning with it in any food preparation system you use – not too hot though; otherwise the hot temperatures of sushi rice could shrivel nori wrappers before they can even begin eating it!

How to Make Sushi Sandwiches with Nori: A Step-by-Step Guide

Nori is a sheet of seaweed made of porphyra red algae. These sheets can be found in maki rolls for their distinct ocean flavor as well as vitamin and mineral-rich properties. Quality will differ among packages; choose those labeled sushi nori for optimal quality results and use either scissors or a chef’s blade to cut in half along its center line, stopping where necessary.

For a delightful twist, try incorporating Teriyaki Salmon Sushi into your recipes, as the rich, savory flavor of teriyaki-glazed salmon pairs perfectly with the fresh, oceanic taste of nori.

Place one spoonful of seasoned, steamed rice in the lower right corner. In the upper right corner, arrange cucumber slices or other items you enjoy, followed by several cubes of flaked salmon or another protein from above in the upper left corner and several avocado slices below in the lower left.

Add rice to multiple quadrants as desired! Just fold:

  • Fold one rice-cucumber quarter over cucumbers
  • Fold that rice-cucumber quadrant over salmon for easy folding
  • Fold together the quadrant of rice, cucumber, and salmon over avocado for each serving of sushi sandwiches. You could serve this treat alone but anyone would appreciate a side of edamame or dumplings!

Teriyaki-Glazed Salmon Skewers with Sushi Rice and DIY Furikake Seasoning

Cook the sushi rice according to package directions; season the wine vinegar according to taste with wasabi and pickled ginger as desired; drizzle a small amount of soy sauce as a dip for extra flavor and use the remainder for serving the sushi rolls.

  • Combine soy sauce, mirin, brown and white sugars, ginger garlic paste, and water in a saucepan; bring to a boil.
  • Combine 1 tablespoon of water and cornstarch in a small bowl until dissolved; whisk into your sauce while heating to a boil again, reduce to simmer gradually until reduced enough that a spoon can coat itself; cool before taking off heat. TIP You can make this sauce ahead of time!
  • Arrange the salmon in a baking dish and cut it into 1- to 1 1/2-inch cubes before pouring cooled teriyaki sauce over it to marinate in the fridge for at least 30 minutes and up to two hours.
  • Preheat your oven to 450degF before placing your dish inside for baking.
  • Spray aluminum foil over a sheet tray in order to keep the fish off of it.
  • On another tray, arrange your salmon skewers, threading two to three pieces on each skewer – until just barely opaque (approx. 8-10 minutes of cooking time).

  • While your salmon cooks, pour any extra marinade into a saucepan and bring it to a rolling boil. After taking it out of the oven and brushing it with teriyaki, sprinkle furikake on top; each brand’s furikake blend varies greatly and makes delicious popcorn toppings, Asian noodles, or sushi rice dishes!
  • With either a chef’s knife or scissors, cut nori sheets in half and stop at their centers before fluffing with a wooden spatula to create fluffy rice; use some drops of rice wine vinegar as seasoning; let cool at room or warm temperature so as to protect nori from shrinking in too hot of temperatures before assembling your assembled parts.
  • Place a sheet with its cut side facing you on your workspace, placing a spoonful of seasoned, steamed rice in the lower right corner and several cucumber slices in the upper right. In addition, arrange cubes of flaked salmon in the top left corner for display.
  • Add avocado slices in the lower left corner. Bring out pickled ginger or wasabi as desired!
  • Fold up the sushi sandwich: Fold the rice quarter over the cucumbers. Fold rice-cucumber quarter onto salmon for easy assembly.
  • Fold the quadrant of rice, cucumber, and salmon onto an avocado slice and dip into soya sauce before enjoying!
